A wonderfully unique oil, this distillation of Boswellia carterii frankincense oil is from Somalia. It is produced in smaller batches and generally considered superior to most large batch varieties. 

The aroma of Frankincense is exotic, fresh, sweet, balsamic and resinous with a hint of spice. Its enticing wood aroma is sensual and freeing.

The best location for growing and distilling frankincense is considered by many perfumers to be Oman, India. However, in recent years Oman Frankincense has become endangered due to over harvesting practices.

This small batch Somalian variety of Frankincense carterii is of the finest quality available in the world. Frankincense oil produced in Somalia, is where the Roman Catholic Church buys most of its stock each year.

Frankincense has been traded for over 5000 year. It is one of the sacred and holy oils used since ancient times when aromatic oils were traded like valuable commodities and considered as precious as gold.

Frankincense is “tapped” by slashing the bark of the thin and haggard looking, but robust trees. This process, called striping, allows the tree’s resin to bleed out and harden into tears. There are several species of frankincense trees used for distilling the oil.

Tapping is done two to three times a year with the final tap producing the best tears due to their higher aromatic chemical content. Generally, the more opaque the resin tears are the more superior the quality.

There is some concern that frankincense tree populations are in severe decline due, in part, from over harvesting, as well as other environmental factors.

Many of the characteristic properties of Frankincense oil are found in both the frereana and carterii species though frereana is most often preferred by perfumers.

Its remarkable ability to maintain its integrity in any blend has given Frankincense a reputation for bestowing this same stability of character and, "to remain true to oneself."
